The Herseys

Tim and Eliza Hersey built this cabin on a small area of land on the west banks of Mud Creek.  The first settlers of Abilene, and one of the first in Dickinson County.  Hersey stumbled upon this land when he was surveying from Ft. Riley.    He built a cabin in 1857, and collected his family from Illinois to leave civilization for the wide open prairie.

Hersey put up a grist mill and saw mill and started bringing in the travelers on the Butterfield/Overland Despatch Stagecoach line to Colorado.
